Tredegar Band celebrated
its centenary in 1976 and as part of their plans decided to release its first
commercial LP recording.
‘Bound in Brass’ was released in 1977 on the Black Mountain Record label – the company
specialising in recording Welsh artists.
The release coincided with the band’s appearance as the famous Cyfarthfa Ironworks Band in the BBC Wales television series, ‘Off to Philadelphia in the Morning’ set in 1854, which had just been aired. The images on the front of the LP are taken from the series - the band dressed in period uniforms with some players holding historic instruments that were lent for filming by the Cyfarthfa Castle Museum. Musical Director John Childs is seen dressed as Robert Livesey, the famous professional conductor of the band (complete with false beard).
The LP featured easy listening
items with the sleeve notes written by Roy Newsome – resident conductor of the
Black Dyke Mills Band and a long term professional advisor to the band.

The aim of this Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) supported project is to provide an on-line multi-media resource that will celebrate and interpret the historical importance of the social, cultural and musical achievements of Tredegar Town Band over a time-line of the past 170 years – from the earliest reported origins in 1849 to date.
