National Youth Band of Wales
MD Ian Porthouse and principal cornet Dewi Griffiths have been playing leading roles with the 2017 National Youth Brass Band of Wales.
Ian has been directing the band on their annual course in Monmouth, whilst Dewi will be the featured guest soloist at their concert at Porthcawl’s Grand Theatre on Sunday 30th July (2.30pm).
“It’s a great honour to be invited to conduct the band - one which has so much talent in the ranks, including our own players from Tredegar,” Ian said.
“The added bonus though is that Dewi is the guest soloist. I couldn’t think of anyone better to inspire youngsters with their playing. You can see their eyes open wide as soon as he picked up his instrument. It's been a very rewarding musical week and we are all looking forward to the concert which will feature plenty of substantial music.”
He added: “I’m also very proud that three of our young players in Emily Humphries, Lewis Rees and Amy Herman are playing such important roles and delighted that Dewi and our horn star Chris Davies are here to be part of the excellent tutor team.”

Meanwhile, Dewi, who will be performing Edward Gregson’s demanding ‘Cornet Concerto’ added: “It’s great for the future of Welsh banding and Tredegar in particular that we have this talent coming through. It’s been a great week and I’m sure it will be rounded off with a great concert.”
The concert will take place at 2.30pm on Sunday 30th July at the Grand Pavilion Porthcawl (CF36 3YW)
